This course introduces students to contemporary novels, short stories, and poetry from award-winning international authors. Readings focus on fictional narratives from Nigeria, Afghanistan, China, Brazil, and other countries. Students expand their knowledge of different cultures and are able to see the world through the eyes of a diverse array of characters. Most readings for this course appear on the recommended reading list for the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition Examination. Primary novels include:
The Kite Runner is the story of Amir and Hassan, two young Afghani boys who grow up during the turbulent events of the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy, intervention from the Soviet military, refugee exodus to Pakistan, and the rise of the Taliban. Major themes include survival, guilt, redemption, and forgiveness.

The Good Earth tells the story of Wang Lung, a poor farmer in a small village in China before World War I, as he and his family struggle to find balance between the new modernization of their country and their beloved ancient traditions. Themes include progress versus tradition, wealth versus poverty, the nourishing power of the land, and the importance of family in surviving hardships.

Things Fall Apart focuses on the life of Okonkwo, a wrestling champion and yam farmer in late nineteenth-century Nigeria. When Christian missionaries and the British military change the power dynamics in his village, Okonkwo is willing to take dangerous actions to maintain the traditions and dignity of his people. Themes include destiny, clashes between cultures, and societal complexities.
